It just took seven years.</p>

<h2 id="graduation">Graduation</h2>

<p>I started college at Colorado School of Mines 2016, and seven years later I graduate from Boise State in 2023. In between the seven years a lot happened. I struggled with depression around 2018, dropping out of CSM to late into a semester to drop classes, plummeting my GPA, and moved back to Idaho, where a family friend was kind enough to give me a job at his business. A lot of other stuff happened, I took some classes to get my GPA up, but BSU kept rejecting me, then COVID hit. I read an article that colleges were looking to enroll students because they were struggling and the next application I sent in I got accepted. Three years after that I graduated with my Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, a field I love.</p>

<h2 id="a-day-in-my-life">A Day In My Life</h2>

<p>My family has a tradition that almost every New Year, they make a short video showing their <em>Day In The Life</em>. These short videos have been a great way to see what my sister and brother and law are up to while they travel the country for his medical placements, what my brother is up to in college, and what all my family friends have been doing. In previous years I had not made one, but with a degree in my pocket, my little Nissan Leaf getting worse by the day, and a New <em>In-N-Out</em> opening up in Meridian with cues up to 8hrs, I knew what I was going to do with my Day.</p>

<p>I am incredibly proud of how this came out. I love the parallel in the video about how long it took me to graduate and how long it took me in the Leaf to get to In-N-Out. And because it took a long time, it <em>must</em> have been a good use of my time. <em>Right?</em></p>

It just took seven years.]]></summary></entry><entry><title type="html">IPCO Internship</title><link href="https://coprivnicar.com/blog/IPCO-Internship/" rel="alternate" type="text/html" title="IPCO Internship" /><published>2022-09-29T00:00:00+00:00</published><updated>2022-09-29T00:00:00+00:00</updated><id>https://coprivnicar.com/blog/IPCO-Internship</id><content type="html" xml:base="https://coprivnicar.com/blog/IPCO-Internship/"><![CDATA[<p>This summer I had the opportunity to work at the power company for much of the Boise area, Idaho Power. The opportunity to work at Idaho Power was unexpected to say the least, as it is  a coveted internship and I have only had a single power class in my time at BSU, so my practical and mathematical understanding of power at the time was limited to say the least.</p>

<p>During my first interview, at one point I forgot how to calculate power, and had to ask if I could use my notes from my Renewable Power class, definitely a little embarrassing. Many of the other questions were about topics I didn’t have a lot of knowledge to answer well, so I found myself giving it my best shot, but ultimately telling them I don’t know how to calculate that. All to say, I didn’t expect to get a second interview.</p>

<p>I did get a second interview thankfully, in which I was asked about different scenarios and how I would react. Situations like, how would you work with a coworker who is obstinate, how have you in the past resolved conflicts, etc. One question that stuck out to me was how I see Idaho Power adapting to big changes in power loads and generation, such as Electric Vehicles, (EVs) and the push for renewable energy. My answer was long but I recall mentioning how renewable energy sources often are unstable, and EVs draw a massive amount of power, a difficult combination.</p>

<p>I actually have an EV myself, a 2012 Nissan Leaf that can get around ~30 miles @ 80% charge, ~35 miles @ 100%, so my understanding of the pros and cons are visceral for me. As a result I had done a bunch of research on the chargers and different types of EVs to figure out what would work best for me. When I mentioned this, a few other questions came up, and ultimately the biggest summer project was related to EV’s.</p>

<p>When I first learned I was working with the Methods &amp; Materials (M&amp;M) department I was very confused, as I am not a materials engineer, and the name made it sound like I was going to be doing material work. However, the M&amp;M department at Idaho Power, would be what is considered the standards department anywhere else. The group I worked for is in charge of setting and evaluating the standards and methods that the Company uses to build and evaluate much of the power infrastructure, and determine the materials that will be used.</p>

<p>One interesting facet of working in the Methods &amp; Materials department is that with the global material shortage, the M&amp;M department was responsible for finding replacements and fixing materials failures. I had the chance to learn how IPCO dealt with material failures and saw how difficult it can be to maintain the amount of growth that Idaho is experiencing while being short of the materials necessary for electrification. On a few occasions I went out with my mentor and followed different crews around who were installing the cabling to new housing developments, and got to visually trace how the dense residential areas are laid out to allow for all of them to get power.</p>

<h2 id="my-project">My Project</h2>

<p>My summer project at Idaho Power was generally to look at how EV’s and their adoption over time would impact the electric grids loading on a residential level. To do this my first task was to understand and figure out how to collate data gathered via Idaho Power’s Automated Metering System (AMI) that all residential dwellings have attached. These AMI meters I find really interesting, they actually send data by short circuiting the AC power signal at the zero crossing to send a binary coded signal. Because the power oscillates at 60Hz the signal sent takes a while to send and receive, but it’s an effective and low cost solution.</p>

<p>My mentor in the M&amp;M department had collected some AMI data which consisted of hourly power use data for around six transformers in a neighborhood and performed two methods of analysis to the data. The first and simplest to complete was Sum of Peaks. Sum of Peaks consisted of looking at individual meters on a transformer and find their all time highest power draw, then adding all of these peaks together to get the highest possible power draw on the transformer. The benefit of Sum of Peaks (SoP) was that it represents the worst case scenario for power draw if all attached meters draw their max power at the same time. It also allowed the data to be broken down into the Sum of Peaks of each hour over the course of the day so you could see how the peak power use changes over the course of the day. The second method of analysis was Peak of Sums (PoS), which consisted of looking at transformer, and finding the highest actual power draw over a given timeframe. This method presents a more realistic power draw at a given time, but data could only be broken down by month, so the hourly detail is lost.</p>

<p>I generally opted to use PoS as it provided a more realistic power draw, but it also was more reflective of the diversity factor of a transformer. The diversity factor is an equation that is used to estimate when individual meters on a transformer hit their peaks. Households often hit their highest energy usage in the later afternoon, but not all hit their peak at the exact same time. The diversity factor equation takes the number of meters attached, and is meant to represent and account for the different peak times for households on a transformer.</p>

<p>After determining how I wanted to analyze meter and transformer data, I collected data for 123 transformers with nearly a thousand meters total. This data came in the form of an excel sheet with the transformer ID, meter ID, date, time &amp; power use in the hour. To sort this data, my mentor used excel to find the PoS and SoP for a few transformers only, and he told me it took a while to sort out. Particularly Peak of Sums was difficult as you had to add each individual hour of each transformer together and compared to the others, while SoP you could just find the maximum value in an array. My mentor in his first go at this told me it took several hours to do PoS for a single transformer, so to ensure I could do this efficiently I decided to write a program that would load all the excel data into a few different arrays and then perform SoP and Pos, kicking out the collected data back into an excel file where it could be used for further analysis.</p>

<p>While initially I wanted to use MatLab, after talking to a professor and now summer coworker, and learning a Matlab license costs a few thousand, I went with Python, and the Python library <a href="https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/python-trigonometric-operations-in-excel-file-using-openpyxl/?ref=rp">OpenPyXL</a>. This library allows the reading writing and evaluating of an excel document providing all of the excel functionality I needed and more. I built a few different python structures to accommodate the data that was collected, and then further functions to collate it into the information I wanted. This data was then organized into an Excel sheet, color coded, broken down by transformer location and which analysis was done. Putting the program together took around two weeks of intense work because OpenPyXL was new, and I haven’t gotten the chance to write a big program for a while. Working on it allowed me to check into the hyperfocus part of my brain, and it was interesting because normally when I focus, I can focus for as long as needed. Working 8 hour days, I had stop and pick up where I left off many times not only after work, but also to talk to coworkers. I found I had a hard time bringing 100% of my attention back to what I was working on and determining where I had left off. This meant I found myself evaluating and revaluating sections of code I wrote previously and led me to creating very thorough comments that explained what everything did so I didn’t have to start from zero every time my attention was diverted. This is generally accepted as good practice anyway, but this really is the first time I’ve found it necessary to write comments to myself, for myself.</p>

<p>This collected data measured the current transformer loads across the Idaho Power (IPC) territory currently, to look at the impact of EVs I opted to do two methods of measuring the impact. The first used the SoP transformer data, EV charger level statistics and three different adoption curves that projected EV adoption to find how over time as more households have EVs, how the grid would impacted. This model allowed me to find in detail how residential transformers would be impactd as more EVs were attached.</p>

<p>The second method used PoS data and utilized a <a href="https://www.idahopower.com/energy-environment/green-choices/electric-vehicles/ev-network/">survey IPC</a> has had available on their site, where people can go on and if they have an EV, put the make, model of their car and their address. After filling it out myself I was able to analyze the transformers of people who bought an EV were attached to, and see how their power usage has changed in comparison with their neighbors. I used the same python program I wrote previously to analyze the change per year on each of these transformers. This showed that there was a significant power increase in houses that had EVs, averaging out to an increase in a 6kWh during peak hours. The difference was obvious, not only compared to power use prior to the neighbors, but especially so in comparison to years prior to the EV purchase. This 6kWh increase I believe is due to Level 2 EV chargers which generally are sized at 6kWh, and it was applied on the hourly SoP data to find the increase.</p>

<p>Both of these methods gave similar results, as both demonstrate that as more households have EVs and EV chargers, we will see more transformers overloading. Overloaded transformers present a problem because it leads to poor power quality, voltage flicker, and if it remained overloaded, it could cause all power to be lost to the attached meters. My recommendation summarized is to upsize some of the smaller residential transformers by a size, and for some of the larger transformers, use a relatively new transformer oil, <a href="https://www.cargill.com/bioindustrial/dielectric-fluids/fr3-fluid">FR3</a>, which allows up to 20% additional load. FR3 is also soybean based, compared to mineral oil which is oil based, so it is better for the environment as well. The good news here is that the most aggressive adoption curve I used with the first model, had only 15% of transformers overloading in 2050 when approximately 70% of households would have EV. That means there is an approximate 30 years before overloading becomes a problem. Pushing that same prediction out to 95% which is predicted to happen in 2093, around 30% of the transformers overload. So we have a while before serious overloading becomes an issue, and by being proactive, serious issues can be avoided. The second model based on the survey model, only had around 10-15% of the transformers overloading, still an issue but this model doesn’t give us a timeline in which it would happen.</p>

<p>There was a study I found that did a similar study on a larger level, titled <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8749456/">Distribution grid impacts of electric vehicles: A California case study</a> that says around 20% of the circuits across the PG&amp;E territory will need to be upgraded. This number is close to the number both the models I developed, which is encouraging, though the California study encompassed all levels of distribution, not just residential from what I could tell. The first model can seen as a worst case scenario, and the second a best case, and averaging them out, we come to a number similar to the 20%, though my study only consisted of residential transformers, not transmission level transformers and circuits, which will be a crucial consideration in the future.</p>

<p>My second project at Idaho Power was to create a Line &amp; Transformer loss calculator. This project, while smaller in scope presented more mathematical difficulties for me. The first project was a lot of number crunching, programming, and analysis, while the loss calculator required much more power maths and understanding. Initially I was really struggling to understand how power was transmitted and lost on a transmission line via inductance and resistance. My coworkers were kind enough to spend a lot of time working with me and helping me understand power, how it is transmitted and how it is lost. These fundamentals are concepts I struggled with previously and getting the chance to talk with experienced engineers, I really started to understand the concepts I had been struggling with in class.</p>

<p>The power loss calculator I developed was to ensure that the loss power values that the meters calculated  for industrial customers were correctly calculating the power lost between the meter itself, and the point that Idaho Power connected to the customer. After learning about line losses, learning about transformer losses was a natural development. I will be taking my first full power class this next semester, Fall 2022. Concepts that I had struggled with in concept, such as Line-to-Line voltage, and a transformers high vs, low side were all taken into account through trial and error, and as a result, my understanding, and the excel calculator improved. To ensure that the calculator was working correctly, I had the opportunity to sit down with an ION meter and send it voltage and current, as well as line and transformer details to get several points to compare my calculator with. This was interested, and developed my understanding for how Idaho Power gathers the power use information required to actually charge for power, and what all goes into it.</p>

<p>My time at Idaho Power was amazing, I had the opportunity to visit a few of the dams, Hells Canyon dam where me and the other interns had the chance to get on a jet boat and go up and down the river, then the next week Swan Falls dam, where we had the chance to go down near the actual dam turbines, which was amazing. Many other field trips inbetween up the internship nicely. One of the big IPC projects that is going on is the 500kV line, Boardman-to-Hemmingway, and we got the chance to see the Hemmingway substation that it will connect to. The machines and transformers there were incredibly massive to handle such high voltages.</p>

<p>I got the chance to follow around “Push Crews” who install the cables from the transformer level to residents. Every site I visited and every person I met was kind and helpful and very willing to answer any questions I had no matter how small or large. I was frankly surprised by that, from linemen who are out in the field keeping everything together and working, to the CEO, Lisa Grow, who I met in passing a few times. Everyone was kind and helpful. I also had the chance to make friends with the other interns, and it was so fun to have the opportunity to make friends who go to different schools, or are in different disciplines and spend time and talk with them about what their projects were. Getting their insight on what we were seeing and learning from the tours.</p>

<p>This internship was absolutely incredible, I am so glad I had the opportunity to work with everyone in Methods &amp; Materials. Being able to sit and work with many experienced engineers and talk about concepts I had only ever worked with in class on a theoretical level was fascinating and allowed me to develop more understanding then I could have just in class. I don’t know if the conclusions I came to will be considered, or the calculator I developed used, though I have been told both are incredibly helpful, but what I learned in the process of developing them was invaluable. I really have enjoyed electrical engineering, the concepts I have found fascinating, and while power being a blank space in my understanding was scary to have while working at Idaho <em>Power</em> everyone was helpful and kind in helping me learn more then just the theoretical math behind it all, but how it is applied in real life.</p>]]></content><author><name></name></author><category term="internship" /><summary type="html"><![CDATA[This summer I had the opportunity to work at the power company for much of the Boise area, Idaho Power. <p>I love audio, audio manipulation, and analog audio formats. I’ve been collecting vinyl for many years now, and I am hoping to make a vinyl lathe this summer. Before I started this, I thought I’d try a much smaller project, plotting audio onto a spiral, similar to art projects I’ve seen in the past. By doing this I hoped to be able to figure out how I can use my Axidraw machine in conjunction with Matlab to create records I can play!</p>

<h2 id="the-process">The Process</h2>

<p>The first thing I had to do was figure out how to plot a spiral, figuring the Archimedean spiral was easy to program, I opened up Matlab, created an array for the angle and a decreasing radius. This was then plotted, as seen below, which leads to a classic spiral.</p>

<p>Then by importing the audio, plotting it over time, and taking the magnitude, I added the magnitude of the audio at any given time to the radius of the spiral. After a bit of time debugging the code, and making things a little easier, I wrapped the whole thing in a function and made a Matlab App to visualize the spiral and the options easier!</p>

<h2 id="the-app">The App</h2>

<p>I have never made a Matlab App before, but it is fairly easy! Matlab App GUI installed, I added the function, added sliders for variables and it all worked golden!</p>

<p>A few tests I did, came out interesting! First was playing an F and C chord on the OP-1 and importing that into the program to see what came out. You can see that the F-Chord is much less wavy then the C-Chord, which I believe is a result of the varying loudness that can be heard in the files which I linked below the images.</p>

<p>These were really neat looking, and I’m very happy about how they came out. Next I tried plotting a voicemail I got, which also ended up very nicely, so I decided to plot it using my Axidraw.</p>

<p>The ground is on a single plane, and only so much can be grown and sown, it stands to reason, multiple planes would allow more to be grown. The height of any given plant would be limited, but with plants such as microgreens you don’t need a lot of vertical room to grow! That and in the future, I’d love to grow and sell microgreens, as turns out it is easy, and they are a bit of a <a href="https://grocycle.com/microgreens-for-profit/">cash crop</a>.</p>

<p>With this in mind, and no job but travel over the summer, I decided to build a hydroponic grow rack, to experiment and see what I can grow! Only recently have I had the time to sit down and write about it.</p>

<h2 id="planning-and-building">Planning and Building</h2>

<p>I drew up some plans for a Nutrient Film growing system (NFT), which I have been unable to find, but the idea can be seen <a href="https://puregreensaz.com/nutrient-film-technique/">here</a>. The basic idea was to build a PVC pipe rack, with four different tiers where the microgreen trays would be placed. Plastic tubing would be used to have water flow to each layer, and a slight angle to each layer would cause the water to pour through the system, recycling whatever wasn’t absorbed by the plants! Below pictures of the assembly can be seen, there were a few different trials I went through to get the final design, but it works very well!</p>

<p>One change I made to the final design not pictured here, is how I ended up putting the whole PVC rack in a larger storage bin. This allowed me to more easily add water, and I didn’t have to fill up the water as much.</p>

<p>It worked very well overall, and while it was a bit leaky at times, some duct tape and hot glue kept that in check for the most part.</p>

<h2 id="growing">Growing</h2>

<p>I bought some seeds online, later discovering the local seed store <a href="https://www.northendnursery.com/">North End Organic Nursery</a> where I could purchase seeds much more cheaply and avoiding shipping costs. For the first batch I used a hemp fibre that worked really well, and later experimented with a reusable growing medium that worked alright.</p>

<p>After a three day blackout period, I placed each of the trays on the rack to see how it grew! I had Mizuna, Mustard, and Spicy Radish microgreens.</p>

<p>For the first batch of micros, a few small things failed on me, first was the pump which quit and didn’t provide enough pressure to get water to the top level. The second thing was that one of the leaks led to the shorting of the lights which I had to replace. I had a few extra trays, so I filled those with water, set them outside, and let them grow a bit there until I could get a replacement pump.</p>

<p>Once replaced, the pump worked very well and after a little over a week, I had some good microgreens growing! I continued growing microgreens over the summer, selling a few ounces here and there, but most giving them away, and once trading a few ounces of microgreens for bread which I found quite quaint. I have since stopped consistently growing the microgreens due to the limited time I have on my hands during school, but I am looking forward to picking it back up this summer or early in the Spring!</p>

<h2 id="peppers">Peppers</h2>

<p>It was around this time that I learned that a family friend had grown some peppers using a hydroponic method known as <a href="https://garden.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Methods_of_Hydroponics">Aeroponics</a> where the roots are suspended and water is sprayed on them. In exchange for some microgreens, I borrowed his system, and with some nutrients and advice from him, I started growing some peppers!</p>

<p>After a few weeks, and some trial and error with the nutrient balance, I got some baby peppers! My initial plan was to dehydrate the peppers and chop them into a powder that could be put in burritos and dip, but as I didn’t end up having very many nor very large peppers, I opted to keep them as pepper chips. I also purchased the wrong types of peppers, so they were all sweet peppers, so they served better as chips anyway.</p>

<p>I’m hoping to do better this next summer when places are selling pepper plants again, I think I messed up the nutrient balance early on, throwing the natural cycle out of rhythm and hence diminishing my potential yield.</p>

<h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2>

<p>With the trials this summer, I’d not only like to take what I learned into future summers, but also whatever farm I hope to live in in the future. I put together a rough spreadsheet documenting potential earnings which was fun. It all seems overly optimistic, but with it does give a good idea of what is possible when growing efficiently.</p>

<h2 id="day-seven">Day Seven</h2>

<p>Woke up early so I could head to Reykjavik to get a COVID test to prepare my flight back to the US. Came back negative of course, cause I’m vaxxed, but the US is still requiring that even if your vaccinated for some reason. I made some plans with the German couple to meet at the Volcano later that day, and I had the afternoon in Reykjavik!</p>

<p>I parked near the Maritime Museum where I visited <a href="https://www.coprivnicar.com/blog/Day-One-Iceland/">Day One</a> and started walking to get myself a classic Icelandic Hotdog!</p>

<p>The onions, raw and fried were amazing and made what would otherwise be an ordinary hotdog into something that was super flavorful and crunchy. I also stopped by a bakery where I met a gentleman who, while originally from the US, had moved to Iceland right before COVID. I had a Creme Brule Donut there, which the gentleman used a mini-blowtorch to heat up and melt the sugar with. On the inside was some vanilla creme that just made the whole thing even better!</p>

<p>I walked around, and towards the local church, which is a beautiful piece of architecture that Reykjavik is known for, and stopped by a small cafe called Cafe Loki, that I saw served shark! I went inside the Cafe and started talking to the server so I asked him if anything pairs well with shark.</p>

<p>Apparently the local way to eat shark is to chew it until you get most of the flavor, then pound a shot of a local liquor called Brennivin. I ordered both, and sat down to try my shark!</p>

<p>I got a few small pieces of sharks and a shot! The shark itself didn’t taste like fish which I liked, but it was chewy, and had a really rough after taste, and once I hit that point, I took the shot, and it made the shark meat go down a lot easier. The Brennivin itself I had when I met the California guys who had bought a bottle, and honestly it is pretty good. It has a really sweet taste at first, and a smooth middle that sits well on the palate. Then when swallowing you get the alcohol flavor very similar to Schnapps which, when paired well with shark, goes down well!</p>

<p>I was pretty stoked about eating some shark, and while I didn’t really care for it, I have bragging rights about it now!</p>

<h2 id="the-fagradalsfjall-volcano">The Fagradalsfjall Volcano</h2>

<p>Currently in Iceland there is an active Volcano, the first one in maybe 10-11 years, so I was lucky to get the chance to see it. And oh my goodness, it was incredible. Walking up I saw some small Lava Falls, and after an hour hike up to the top, I spent probably 4 hours walking around and just watching explosion after explosion after explosion. It was absolutely incredible seeing thousands of gallons of liquid rock moving across the landscape, and shooting up into the air.</p>

<p>When I was hiking up, I was thinking I’d be on the rim of the Fagradalsfjall, but turns out there was the perfect viewing platform. I was scared when I was under the impression I’d be on the rim, but upon getting to the top, and seeing the first explosion, I was in awe. I was up there for maybe an hour or so, when the German couple came up and we stayed up there until three in the morning, just watching it. I don’t have a way to upload videos here and have them be good quality but I’d definitely recommend viewing the videos on my Instagram, because they are absolutely amazing. Here are some photos that I got while I was there though.</p>

<p>The smoke pictures are absolutely incredible, and during the sunrise/sunset the colors were incredible. The photos don’t show the color or texture of the lava very well, but seeing the liquid rock being propelled upward like that, freeze and float down was absolutely amazing. I started my trek back down the mountain around 2:30am got to my car an hour later, and went to my campsite for the night!</p>

Had class while they were cooking, and they were sharing whatever extras they had.</p>

<p>Later that night, (or 1am this morning) I was spending time with the California’s and a couple from Germany. The German’s bought around 2lbs of horse meat for ~$8, and was cooking it on a disposable charcoal grill. I thought it was going to be raw by how little the charcoal was burning, but it worked! I had a few pieces of charcoal cooked horse, on an Iceland shore! It wasn’t great, and he ended up eating about 1.5lbs of horse meat by himself. It was a great time, just hanging around and talking, and we ended up deciding to clamber down a rocky shore, so we can say we touched the Arctic Sea! (I don’t know if it’s actually the Arctic Sea, but I’m going to pretend). Here’s a picture of us all, right on the coast!</p>

<p>It was a marvelous time, and after getting into my car for bed at around 2am (with the sun coming back up) I went off to bed.</p>

<h2 id="day-six">Day Six</h2>

<p>The next day, I made some PB&amp;J with granola bar crumble and bananas for my friends as a way of repayment which were very good, and everyone seemed to enjoy them, and with the California’s spending the day at the Lake Mosquitoes, I made plans with the German’s who were leaving the 23rd, and also wanted to hike to the active Volcano and hit Blue Lagoon!</p>

<p>I split from there to Asbrygi with another gentleman I had met the previous night who was going clockwise around Iceland, and we ended up hiking to the lake and back instead of to the top of the canyon. It was an honest mistake, that led to us bushwacking on the side of the cliff, but the lake was beautiful.</p>

<p>After making our way out from there, we found the correct hike and did part of the hike, to see the view and go from there.</p>

<p>We went our own ways from there, but ended up meeting up again at the Godafoss Waterfalls again coincidentally, so we walked around there again, and once again, went our separate ways once again!</p>

<p>From there, I drove another few hours through Akureyri, considered the Capital of North Iceland, and to my campsite for the night. There were some beautiful mountains on the way over and reduced my trip to Reykjavik down to 3.5hrs.</p>

<p>At the campsite, I settled down, set up a COVID test in Reykjavik for my flight back to the US, and am headed to bed!</p>

<h2 id="observations">Observations</h2>

<p>Just a few things I’ve noticed about Iceland</p>

    <p>It reminds me a lot of Idaho
Idaho has some minor volcanic activity, and quite a few hot springs, many of the views when driving are along flat dry terrain, with massive mountains in the distance, and there are a lot of hikes, all of which are beautiful. It differs much more then it is similar, but it was nice to be reminded of home when on a long drive.</p>

    <p>SO many single lane bridges
I guess it probably saves money, and there isn’t a huge traffic issue here, but yeah man sometimes those one lane bridges make me nervous when approaching from a blind hill.</p>

<h2 id="day-four">Day Four</h2>

<p>Day 4 was for the most part a driving day, but in the morning there were some absolutely incredible glacial sites to see!</p>

<p>First I had the chance to go on a small hike near my campsite to a Glacial Lake which was incredible. I walked down to the lake the glacier was creating, and found a strong current coming from the glacier which was wild, considering it was like 1C out. But yeah, also saw a few pretty birds that I’ll share at the end of the post!</p>

<p>Next stop from there was the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach, both places were absolutely beautiful, Glacier Lagoon is created by the ice from the glacier nearby cracking off and falling into the lake. The current that is created by the melting ice, causes water and the ice floating in the water to float towards the ocean, which break apart and sometimes will break on the shore causing Diamond Beach!</p>

<p>From there I started a long drive to a campsite in North East Iceland, and ended up driving through a few tunnels right through the mountain, one tunnel being 6km which was crazy.</p>

<p>At my campsite that night, just an empty field in a small city, I ended up meeting a few cool dudes and we ended up chatting for a while about traveling. They were from California, both were Civil Engineers, and it was really neat spending time with them! Tried some jerkied fish, which tasted like Tuna, but overall wasn’t too bad.</p>

<h2 id="day-five">Day Five</h2>

<p>That next morning I ended up grabbing some food with one of the guys at a local bakery which was fun. There was a bit of a communication issue, but we ended asking about one of the baked goods and what was in it and learned that <em>Svine</em> means <em>Ham</em> which was cool. I got a loaf of bread, a ham and cheese roll for lunch, and a vanilla pudding bread twist which was amazing!</p>

<p>From there took a drive towards Lake Myvatn, which I was told translates literally to Lake Lake Mosquito by the person running my camp tonight. And on the way stopped at some geyers near the Krafla Volcano, and a Geothermal Facility near the Volcano. I didn’t actually get a chance to go to the volcano because the path was snowed over, and it was like a 10 miles round hike.</p>

<p>Drove the Lake Myvatn next which was pretty, and headed to my campsite after that and met up with the guys I had met the previous night! They cooked up some potatoes and lamb and shared a bit with me which is kind of them!</p>
